Delicious homemade Lemonade
You only need two ingredients to make delicious homemade lemonade: lemons and sugar. This is a stark contrast to the long list of ingredients in most store-bought lemonades, which include all sorts of artificial sweeteners, fructose syrup, citric acids, and ingredients we can’t even pronounce.
To make fresh lemonade, start with a simple syrup made with sugar dissolved into hot water. Once the syrup is slightly cooled, add the lemon juice. All you have to do then is add some cold water and you’ll have delicious, refreshing lemonade!
The proportions can be varied, depending on how sweet or sour you like your lemonade. To serve, add some ice, a few slices of fresh lemons and, if you have it, some lemon verbena for an added lemon flavor. And since the simple syrup can be stored in a bottle in the refrigerator for a long time, you can be sipping homemade lemonade all year long!
- ¾ cup sugar
- 1 cup water (for the simple syrup)
- ¾ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 3 cups cold water
- --- --- ice cubes
- --- --- fresh slices of lemon
- --- --- sprigs of lemon verbena (optional)
- First, make the simple syrup: In a small saucepan, add the sugar and the water; stir and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for about four to five minutes or until the sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from the heat and let it cool slightly.
- Depending on the size of the lemons, juice four to five of them to make ¾ cup lemon juice. Add the juice to the simple syrup and mix well. Cool completely.
- Pour the lemonade syrup into a glass pitcher. Add two to three cups of ice-cold water and test to make sure it suits your individual taste. Transfer the pitcher to the refrigerator and chill for an hour. Serve with a few slices of lemon, ice cubes and sprigs of lemon verbena.
