This year Orthodox Easter falls just one week after the Western Easter, so in today’s post I have rounded up some of my favorite Greek Easter recipes to share with you!
While a big percentage of my readers are here in the United States, many of you are reading my posts in Greece and in other parts of the world with large Greek communities, such as in the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. I want to wish Happy Easter to everyone who is celebrating Easter this Sunday and Kalo Pascha to all my Greek friends around the world!
My Favorite Greek Easter Recipes
From traditional Easter breads and cookies, to main course lamb recipes, easy side dishes and a few delicious desserts, I hope you will find some inspiration from this post, whether you celebrate Greek Easter or not!
EASY GREEK EASTER BREAD (TSOUREKI)
This braided Greek Easter bread, or tsoureki, is a brioche-type of yeast bread made with eggs, milk, and butter that is always made in the week leading up to Greek Orthodox Easter. It is a delicious breakfast bread whose distinctive flavor comes from an aromatic spice called makhlepi, a spice that is used for baking especially during the Easter holiday!
Easter Cookies (koulourakia)
When these little Easter cookies come out of the oven, the whole house fills with the aromas of orange and vanilla! They are usually made in great quantities and, because they keep so well, they last for weeks after Easter! They are often served with naturally dyed hard boiled eggs which symbolize rebirth and new life. While these are traditional at Easter time, they can be made any time of the year and are great with your morning coffee or afternoon tea!
Steamed Spring Asparagus and Deviled Eggs
To so many of us, asparagus means spring. In markets now, this is the best time of the year to enjoy steamed spring asparagus – especially when it is served with a bright shallot vinaigrette and delicious deviled eggs!
Greek Panzanella Salad
My Greek version of panzanella has a few more seasonal vegetables added to the traditional Italian version, along with Kalamata olives and Feta cheese. The addition of oregano, instead of the basil, gives the salad an unmistakable Greek flavor profile. The chunks of bread soak up the juices of the ripe tomatoes and the simple garlic-oregano dressing makes every bite sweet, tangy, and bold, all at the same time.
Skillet Roasted Potatoes with Lemon & Parsley
These crispy, skillet-roasted potatoes with lemon and parsley are the perfect side dish for your Easter dinner centerpiece (and, year ’round for all of us who love potatoes)! They are wonderful served with lamb and they always disappear quickly (so make lots)!
Grilled Lemon and Garlic Lamb Chops
A simple lemon and garlic marinade gives these grilled lamb chops an incredible flavor and you are only minutes away from enjoying the most tender and flavorful lamb chops you have ever had! This is one of my older recipes on the blog that is still a favorite in my family! Pair them with the skillet-roasted potatoes with lemon and parsley (above) and some tzatziki and they will disappear in no time.
Traditional Greek Roasted Leg of Lamb and Potatoes
When it comes to planning that special Easter meal, roast lamb is always the meat of choice for Greeks. Although many associate this with images of slowly cooking a whole lamb on the spit on Easter Sunday, there is an easier way to enjoy this truly mouth-watering delicacy at home on a much smaller scale! This roasted leg of lamb with potatoes could not be easier to make.
Spiced Lamb Filo Tart with Pine Nuts and Currents
This Spiced Lamb Filo Tart with Pine Nuts and Currants looks festive and beautiful on the table and can be served as an appetizer, or, as part of a spread of delicious Easter dishes to share!
Traditional Greek Baklava
My family recipe for Traditional Greek Baklava includes layers upon layers of crispy filo pastry, each one lightly buttered and filled with chopped nuts and spices, baked until golden brown, and then drizzled with a heavenly honey-and-orange infused syrup! This is a REAL indulgence for the Easter table!
Ricotta and Chocolate Crumb Cake
This ricotta and chocolate crumb cake from Italy is a family favorite! A small slice of this delicious cake with a demitasse of strong coffee is the perfect way to enjoy the cake and top off your meal!
