If you are looking for ideas of what to serve for a lighter brunch or as a party appetizer, nothing beats the ease of these delicious smoked salmon tartines. Elegant and super flavorful, these healthy, bite-size treats are very tasty and so easy to make!
What is a tartine?
A tartine is nothing more than a French open-faced sandwich that is topped with a variety of savory ingredients. Lighter than normal sandwiches, tartines are versatile, colorful, and fun to make! They are the ideal party appetizer because everyone can assemble their own, choosing from an assortment of delicious toppings that pair well together.
Essential Ingredients for these Delicious Smoked Salmon Tartines
- Salmon: smoked, thinly sliced salmon, about 3-4 oz.
- Bread: baguette, ciabatta, sourdough, rye or whole wheat bread, thinly sliced
- Cheese: Boursin herb cheese, or, whipped Cream Cheese, at room temperature
- Cucumber: English cucumbers, or, mini cucumbers, thinly sliced
- Shallots: or, red onions, very thinly sliced into ribbons
- Capers: the tiny ones, or, chopped green olives
- Fresh Herbs: fresh dill and fresh chives
- Radishes: different colors, sliced very thinly
- Lemon slices
- Extra virgin olive oil: a good finishing olive oil
- Seasoning: use your favorite, or, “everything but the bagel” seasoning mix
How to assemble the salmon tartines
- The base: start with toasted slices of really good bread. For even more flavor, brush the slices with olive oil and lightly brown it in a hot skillet on both sides
- The cheese spread: spread some Boursin or whipped cream cheese on the toasted bread
- The salmon: a small package of wild smoked salmon goes along way and all you have to do is to flake the fillet gently, in order to separate it into small segments. If you are not a fan of salmon, smoked trout is a delicious alternative.
- Toppings: choose from any combination of sliced cucumbers, radishes, capers, shallots and fresh herbs
- Drizzle & Sprinkle: once the tartines are assembled, all you need to do is to drizzle with some of your best olive oil, a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of your favorite seasoning, or, flaky sea salt
The best thing about tartines, is just how versatile they are. Because there are no rules about how to make them, you can use any ingredients you prefer (or that you have in your ‘fridge). By simply switching out your tartine bread options and using a different bread, the whole flavor profile will change. Besides making a great addition to any party buffet or brunch spread, tartines are a bright and healthy idea for a quick snack and a light lunch next to a delicious green salad.
