December is the month that the cold temperatures make us focus on comfort food, dream of steaming bowls of soups and stews, and crave the aromas of warm baked treats more than ever. With that in mind, today I am sharing with you Ten Comforting Cold Weather Recipes to Make This Winter!
As I was going through the recipes on my blog, I put together some of the dishes that I look forward to making this month, as we get closer to the hectic days of the holidays. Warm soups, nourishing stews, hearty casseroles, favorite breads and delicious baked goods are some of the recipe you will read in this post.
I hope you find some inspiration as we revisit some of my favorite winter recipes and decide to give them a try. Let me know if any of them becomes a staple in your cold-weather recipe rotation as well. Happy cooking and happy sharing!
Ten Comforting Cold Weather Recipes to Make This Winter
This heartwarming soup of chicken broth, rice, and lemon is pure comfort in a bowl and is one of the most beloved soups among kids and adults alike in Greece. This is the ultimate soup that cures everything and warms you from the inside out!
The perfect hearty and comforting cold weather soup! Who would not welcome coming home to enjoy a bowl of this steaming soup? A winter soup with tender meatballs simmering in a delicious lemon broth. This Greek meatball soup is a favorite dish of my childhood.
Foolproof “Bread in a Pot” Recipe
If you have never attempted baking a loaf of bread before, this “bread in a pot” recipe is for you. At the same time, if you are a confident baker and just want to have a fresh bread for dinner tonight without fussing too much about it, this recipe is for you too!
Layers of crispy, flaky filo pastry is filled with a flavor-packed, spiced meat mixture of warm spices, cumin, coriander, and currants for a little sweetness. Serve alongside a creamy yogurt and mint sauce and you have the perfect finger food for your holiday buffet or pot luck party.
Easy Spinach and Rice (Spanakorizo)
Spanakorizo (which translates as spinach rice) is a classic Greek vegetarian dish; one of the many, nutrient-packed, simple dishes found in abundance in Greek cuisine. With its bright flavor and great texture, this dish is usually served on its own, with just some Feta cheese, Kalamata olives, and good bread on the side.
Traditional Greek Stuffed Cabbage Rolls (Lahanodolmades)
This is another hearty, comforting dish, especially during the colder months of the year. In northwestern Greece, where I come from, it is also called, “yiaprakia“, and is typically served on Sundays. The rolled cabbages have a filling of rice, onions, ground beef and fresh herbs. They braise low and slow and at the end they are topped with the Queen of Greek sauces, a delicious lemony avgolemono.
Salmon and Spinach in Filo Pastry
Fish baked “en croûte” is just a fancy culinary term to describe the method of baking it wrapped in pastry dough. In this recipe, we combine salmon and spinach in filo pastry for a delicious main course; a much easier–and certainly healthier–alternative to this classic. This recipe is a favorite of my viewers!
Greek Beef Stew and Baked Orzo
This traditional Greek Beef Stew and Baked Orzo Recipe (Yiouvetsi) is a hearty and comforting dish that I always make for my family when the temperatures start to drop. It is a beloved Sunday family meal; flavorful, satisfying and very easy to put together.
Greek Lamb Fricassée with Avgolemono Sauce
Lamb fricassée with avgolemono is a Greek-style lamb braised with lots of greens and finished with the traditional egg-lemon sauce. The many greens that are added to this stew and the lemon juice make it surprisingly light and extremely flavorful.
Apple and Cinnamon Pull-Apart Bread
This sweet, yeasty bread is a truly delicious treat. It is soft and tender and it pulls apart easily, which makes it easy to share. A simple brioche dough that is brushed with melted, browned butter, diced apples and sprinkled with brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. So good!
