Hello friends! Today’s post is a little different than my usual ones. Instead of a new recipe, I want to share some photographs from my visit to the Greek island of Skiathos this summer.
For my new followers and readers, do not worry; this is still a food blog. Each year, however, and for all of you who ask me for travel recommendations, I do like to highlight a place I have been, which I believe is worth visiting.
Whether you have been to Greece before, or, are just thinking of going at some point, Skiathos is a beautiful island which you should consider adding to your future travel plans! It is part of the Sporades Islands group which lie in northwestern Aegean Sea. Many of you will know the island as one of the places that the “Mama Mia” movies were filmed, but I can assure you that this gem of an island is much more than that!
5 Things Not to Be Missed on Skiathos
- ⛵️ Early morning walks around the port with a stop to the beautiful peninsula of Bourtzi for a coffee
- ⛵️ Evening walks through the cobbled streets of the old town with its many shops and tavernas to enjoy the local cuisine
- ⛵️ Exploring the northern part of the island, called Kastro (castle), with its breathtaking views of the sea below and a visit to the small beach taverna
- ⛵️ Hikes through the extensive and well-marked trails around the island, through deep green pine forests
- ⛵️ A boat tour to the naturally beautiful Lalaria beach (which is accessible only by the sea), and to the sandy beaches of the tiny private islet of Tsougrias; both perfect for a beach-hopping day trip
This is by no means an exhausted guide to what the beautiful island of Skiathos has to offer but rather, a few suggestions for a first time visitor. I have been fortunate to have visited this island, almost every year for the past 15 years, invited by my friend and her mother to their summer house. These visits have allowed me to explore this island paradise, with its crystal clear waters, sandy beaches and dense pine forests; a real break from the worries of the world!
I hope you enjoy the photos! Back next week with a delicious recipe!

I love that you took a picture of a door. I love pictures of doors and windows, especially on the old islands. The stories they could tell! I have a ton of these from Ikaria where my family is. There is a pride there, and a deep love, and you wonder about all the lives of those who walked through those doors.
Gorgeous photos! Thank you.

I love taking photos of doors, especially these old, weathered wooden doors you find everywhere in Greece….. You are right, Eleni, the stories they tell and all the people who walked through those doors. Thank you for your kind comment!

I am so glad Marilena that our beautiful “islands in the sun” offer inspiration and a precious escape from the day to day to so many people! In view of the latest weather events though, I wish we could do more to protect them!

Thank you, Marianna (and the whole family), for always welcoming us to Skiathos. So many great memories from all the years we have been visiting your beautiful island!
You are right about the devastation of the recent floods … These extreme weather conditions are so very unusual for Greece!
