Tips for Easy Holiday Entertaining
November signals the beginning of two months of holiday celebrations, big family gatherings and all sorts of parties and open houses. Entertaining, whether for just a few friends or for a crowd, does not need to be a daunting or stressful undertaking. With some good planning, and a few time-saving strategies, entertaining can be a breeze.
Here are some suggestions:
- The Planning: Once you have your guest list put together, decide on your menu, making sure to choose seasonal dishes and a few items that can be prepared ahead of time. Next, gather all your recipes and create a detailed shopping list. Prepare the timetable of everything you need to cook. Indicate which dishes need to be made at the last minute and which ones can be made a few days ahead. Buy all non-perishable items from your grocery list early.
- The Set Up: Set the table (or the buffet if you are entertaining a larger group) and lay out serving bowls and platters with a post-it note in each server to indicate what goes where. Choose a simple centerpiece; flowers of similar hues and a mason jar work well together, for example.
- The Drinks: For large parties, keep the beverage station separated from the food table as it helps with the flow. Beyond wine and soft drinks, think also about including seasonal cocktails.
- Food Prep: Two days before the party, make room in your refrigerator for the dishes you will prepare ahead. Cook as much as practical: soups, casseroles, sauces, dips and most desserts can easily be prepared well ahead of time. Make a simple dough for dinner rolls and prep as much as possible: wash, peel, chop, grate and store in the fridge.
- The Big Day: Keep the area near the sink completely free — you will need the space later when the dishes will start to collect. Just before your guests arrive, put the bread rolls in the oven. There is nothing like the aroma of freshly baked bread to great your guests – your house will smell amazing and welcoming!
As your guests arrive, allow an hour for cocktails and appetizers. Put on some music, pour some wine, and relax! Your careful planning will ensure your party is successful and your guests will have a wonderful time.
Remember that the success of a party is based on proper preparation and relaxed, gracious hosts!
